Character name: Vanellope von Schweetz
Fandom: Wreck-It Ralph
Timeline: After her training at Diet Cola Mountain, just when she grabs the medal that she made for Ralph.
Age: 9
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: First off, Vanellope is a glitch. Her code was messed with and so she has moments of “glitching” which acts just how it sounds. It’s a sortof teleportation that she can almost control but has tried to suppress it.
She’s also a 9 year old kid who knows how to build/drive a kart. If that doesn’t terrify you it should.
How would they use their abilities?: For the lulz. What do you want, she’s a kid.
Appearance: Short for her age, Vanellope is a cute little brat of a nine year old with pale skin, black hair, and hazel eyes. Her hair is tied up into a pony tail, with random bits of candy scattered around sortof like hairclips. She wears a green hoodie, a brown miniskirt that looks like a Reeses’s wrapper, white and green striped stockings, and black boots.
Background:
[Spoilers for Wreck-It Ralph, though I won’t go over any big twists. Still, continue at your own risk.]
Wreck-It Ralph is sortof like Toy Story in the regard that when the lights go out at Litwak’s Arcade, the video game characters congregate at Grand Central Station in the multi-outlet that connects all of their games.
Ralph (movie’s protagonist) met the spitfire whilst in the middle of gamejumping over at Hero’s Duty. Vanellope herself was just having a normal day, lounging about in the candy tree forest when she found Ralph climbing the tree she was on. Claiming to be from the candy tree department, Ralph was really after the medal that he lost in the crash landing into Sugar Rush, Vanellope’s home game. Suddenly noticing the “gold coin” hanging on the top branch, Vanellope went after it herself, beating out Ralph in a race to the top for it. Managing to ditch Ralph, Vanellope made her way to the racetrack where the racers pay a fee to race in the Random Roster Race; a daily race that determined which racers would be featured in the game’s roster the next day. Vanellope disguised herself and inserted Ralph’s medal and was officially entered into the race, much to the chagrin to everyone there.
By order of King Candy, glitches are not allowed to race and before Vanellope was arrested, Ralph busted into the track to get back his medal and managed to distract the security guards by wrecking up the starting line. Vanellope was able to escape in the commotion, and headed to the junk yard to work on her homemade pedal-kart. She was confronted by Taffyta Muttonfudge and the other racers, who refused to race against a glitch, mocking that Vanellope had no control over her glitching and would likely cause an accident. And so the kids proceeded to destroy Vanellope’s kart, throwing her in the mud when she tried to get them to stop. Suddenly Ralph made a reappearance, scaring off the other kids to get them to stop. Embarrassed that he saw that, Vanellope snapped at Ralph, who snapped back at her since he only wanted to help. In his frustration, Ralph hammered on a jawbreaker until he managed to break it in half. Noticing his strength, Vanellope hatched an idea: if Ralph helped her break into the kart factory and make a real kart for the race, then she would win the cup and get Ralph his medal back.
The unlikely duo shook on it, and proceeded to sneak into the factory. The kart ended up coming out as a mess during the decorating process, but Vanellope was ecstatic over her and Ralph’s creation, something that surprised Ralph. Just as they were signing their work, King Candy and his security guards find the two and proceeded to apprehend them. Since Vanellope didn’t know how to drive a real kart, they used Ralph’s strength to push and steer the kart to Diet Cola Mountain, an unfinished track, losing their pursuit in the process. Vanellope revealed to Ralph this was where she lived and that since she was a glitch, she’s bullied and tormented by everyone in the game. Because of this same problem, she was also unable to leave the game, meaning she was stuck. She reasoned that if she could win a race, the others would treat her like another racer instead of bullying her all the time.
Since Ralph shared a similar story, the bad guy felt that he needed to help the girl, and so built a track around the Diet Cola and Mentos Geyser for Vanellope to practice. It took a few tries, but as it turned out Vanellope was a natural at racing, easily sailing through the course. Just as they were making their way to the big race, Vanellope forgot a medal that she made for Ralph in the mountain and ran back to get it.
Personality:
Vanellope is a kid, therefore comes off like one for better or worse. Openly mocking, constantly asking questions, talkative, and seemingly on an eternal sugar rushhaha, what more could you ever want from someone who looks so sweet? Yeah, she’s an annoying brat. But a very cute brat. Vanellope has a razor-sharp tongue and a wicked/childish humor. She is the type of kid to make a string of poop jokes. Smart enough to make her own kart by scratch and outsmart most adults, Vanellope knows how to get what she wants.
To be fair, a lot of this is a coping mechanism from being bullied for so long. No one treats her as a person-er program, the other racers simply referring to Vanellope as “the Glitch.” And so they treat Vanellope badly, bullying her with name calling and even going so far as to break the cart she built for the race. Vanellope doesn’t have friends in Sugar Rush, and instead lives in an unfinished game level alone. Because she has unfinished coding, she’s physically unable to leave her game. So she has to live with these people and her situation, becoming a real racer would be the only way to change things for the better. She’s insanely determined to become a real racer, saying she can feel it deep in her code.
She’s just a lonely kid that just wants to be accepted.
More than anything, Vanellope is a very simple girl. She wears simple tomboyish clothes in a game that’s all about the flashy and girly, and, due to her street urchin lifestyle, she gets excited for the smallest things. Even though her kart comes out as a mess of glitter and paint, she’s more than happy to just have a working kart of her own.
Have you read up on how the game works?: The Guide plugin is called Flaming Ferret, and ways to earn money includes missions, odd-jobs, and begging.
1st person sample:
[The Guide clicks on to an adorable child who obviously has no idea how it actually works. Random button pressing for the win.]
Give that back! [And immediately it's grabbed by a rather annoyed looking really really annoyed. Obviously they've been going at this for awhile. Vanellope looks less impressed.]
Hey! What gives? [Shortie's jumping for the Guide, obviously way too short to reach. Come on you don't take a kid's toy like that.]
What is the meaning of this? [Trying to get on with its job, the Vogon holds up a stack of forms from an even bigger stack, covered with crayon drawings and Ad Libs.]
Wow you’re actually reading those? I gave up one page in. [If you blink you'll miss it. Whilst in the midst of her jumping, Vanellope glitches, easily swiping the Guide out of the caught off guard Vogon's grip.] So what kind of game is this anyway? Some kind of space-paper writing simulator? Sounds really boring.
This is not- Will you hold still for two minutes?
[Say what?] Hold still? After jamming that fish-thingie in my ear? No thank you. [Bleh. Makes you shiver just thinking about it.] So how do I get back to my game? Not that I mind hanging around, but y'know, got places to be.
[Exasperated sigh on behalf of the Vogon.] I'm trying to explain your world is- [And the little girl is already halfway out the door.]
Yeah listen, I'm gonna let you finish, but I really gotta go. Thanks for the book Stinkbreath!
[Pindrop.]
Security!
[And the feed cuts, sparing you all the wacky chase scene.]
3rd person sample:
Back and forth. Back and forth.
Vanellope kicked her feet back and forth. Back and forth, just thinking. No one really came around this part of Candy Cane Forest, the place was already huge, so it was a good place for a Glitch to think.
The Arcade had closed a little while ago, the Random Roster Race should be starting registration soon. So the plan will go like this: Vanellope will go in disguise, keeping her top secret kart under wraps. She'll put in a coin and -boom- she'll be in the race. That old fart King Candy will have no choice but to let her drive if she's officially a driver in the race, right? And once she's in the race, then dominate the competition. Foolproof plan. Genius even. Like taking candy from a baby.
Just one small problem though. The gold coin. Huffing, Vanellope slumped down against the tree. Where exactly was she going to get a gold coin? You don't just find them lying around here. You had to earn them in the races. Which she can't drive in. It was like a vicious circle.
No coin. No race.
"Huh?" Standing straight up on her toes, Vanellope could kindof make out some kind of smoke on the other side of the ridge? Whatever it was, the girl could feel the impact all the way over here. "Woah! What's going on?"
